The Green Line

Stories

The war in Yemen has raged for over a decade, leaving a fractured country ruled by competing forces. From the strategic port towns to the frontlines controlled by the Houthi militia, daily life is shaped by war, isolation, and shifting allegiances.

In the south, forces in Aden fight for their own right to exist, while the more isolated Houthis, once a Zaidi revivalist movement, now rule the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen.

Since the Gaza war began, they have attacked ships in the Red Sea and launched Iranian-backed drone and missile strikes on Israel, undeterred by U.S. and allied airstrikes in response.

For the people of Yemen, life remains in limbo between different ruling groups. Nowhere is this more visible than on the government side of the frontlines with the Houthis, where the no man’s land dividing the besieged city of Taiz is overgrown with nature.

They call it the Green Line.
